Techno-logic Tuesday: Time for Telemedicine
As broadband speeds ratchet up all across the country, I am often asked “what does this mean for me?” Sure, it’s great to be able to stream movies or listen to music without interruptions, but is there a bigger goal out there? The answer is a definite and resounding YES! To help prove my point let’s look at telemedicine applications.
Telemedicine is essentially any healthcare activity that is enhanced through some sort of communications service. Although the basic concepts have been around for some time, it has been the increased capabilities that have unlocked the true potential of these applications.
Telemedicine can impact healthcare in many areas. First, it can help lower the costs of healthcare. If you live in a rural community and need to see a specialist you often have to travel quite a distance. With telemedicine, a video conference can be set up at your local doctor’s office with a specialist anywhere in the world. This specialist can observe real time health metrics while having a conversation with you about your symptoms.
Telemedicine also makes the sharing of information between all the different healthcare providers a faster process. I recently went for my annual doctor’s visit and had to sign a form that authorized this action to take place. Essentially, my medical records and history can now be accessed by any clinic, hospital, or pharmacy across the state. This allows providers the ability to make more informed diagnoses and to avoid any adverse drug reactions or allergic reactions.
Telemedicine also makes in home care actually feasible (no we are not talking about WebMD here). Everyday there are smart home apps being developed that can check your blood pressure, make sure medicine is being taken properly and help to monitor blood sugars. Routine health monitoring has never been easier.
Telemedicine is just one of the many exciting frontiers being crossed with the growth of advanced broadband connections. We look forward to exploring other areas of our lives that broadband can enhance in future blog posts.
